Facebook Lite - Fast Surf

Facebook pitches Facebook Lite, bare-bone social networking at the speed of light

Facebook is pitching Facebook Lite, a stripped-down version of the service that will load fast and offer basic network-building features found in its mobile version. The Lite service is primarily designed for people on slow connections but it will be used by others as well, especially for quick checkups that bypass the slower full site.

According to a TechCrunch report, Facebook Lite will load much faster than the full site while replicating features of the mobile site and native Facebook apps for the iPhone, Android, and other mobile platforms. For instance, you’ll be able to add friends and respond to their requests, post photos, videos, and notes, comment and like your friend’s items, check user profiles and their Walls, etc.

The Facebook Lite beta screenshot, credited to “twitgoo” and referenced in the TechCrunch story, reveals a one-column design that lists a real-time stream of your friends’ activities, with three buttons at the top of the page providing options to write to someone’s Wall or post photos and videos. You can also comment on individual items in a feed or check your own Wall, Info, Friends, and Photos&Videos.

Facebook apparently told TechCrunch that the Lite service is being designed for people with slow Internet connections, adding that the initial beta testing has taken place in India, with plans to expand it to Russia and China.
